Mighty No. 9 Looks Mighty Bad

Mighty No. 9, Keiji Inafune’s spiritual successor to Mega Man, is due for release soon, but it seems like people have lost interest in the title. The game was a smashing success on Kickstarter, making over $3.8 million, not including all the extra money it accumulated from Paypal after the campaign ended. It was a game that people were willing to spend a lot of money on in order for it to get released.

All anybody was given at the start of the Kickstarter campaign was some concept art, and a general idea that Mighty No. 9 was to be the “new” Mega Man. The concept art was brilliant, showing an action-packed scene that looked like the modern style Mega Man that everyone has wanted for a long time. It was being made by Inafune too, who is known to most people as the creator of Mega Man (he wasn’t, he was an artist on the first few games, and became a producer for multiple Capcom series later on). It was a sure-fire success.

When we were first shown gameplay, it was underwhelming, but we were told it was alpha footage – very much work-in-progress. The trouble is, Mighty No. 9 never really improved. The closer we’ve gotten to the launch date, we find more and more people annoyed at the game, claiming it looks terrible. I’m very much with these people.

The latest trailer for the game I think shows up the game for what it is, a shameless rip-off of a much-loved series. Since the start, I have thought Mighty No. 9 looks bad, like a cheap, poor fan game based off of Mega Man. The characters look like Mega Man OCs you’d find on a site such as Deviant Art, and the gameplay looks similar to, but worse than Mega Man. Mighty No. 9 is based around ‘dashing’, which as a gameplay hook looks about as tedious as watching paint dry. Inafune and co. couldn’t just make it an almost carbon copy of Mega Man. No. They had to break up the experience by adding in a feature that looks infuriating at best, momentum killing at worst.

The dashing and general gameplay aren’t the biggest issues Mighty No. 9 has though. As I’ve already said, the character designs are poor, and the same can be said of the environments and enemies. The game looks bland, lifeless and empty. Mighty No. 9 just doesn’t look nice either. Character models are poor, the animation is laughably awful, environments are flat and the effects, such as explosions look poor. It doesn’t look like a game that had a budget of almost $4 million, it looks ridiculously cheap.

I understand that game development costs a lot of money, and $4 million isn’t actually a huge amount, but surely they could’ve made something better looking than this? As it stands, Mighty No. 9 looks like a rushed product, and much worse than most anything else I’ve seen for a long time. Perhaps the game could do with another delay in order to apply more polish?

Mighty No. 9 was successfully funded on the 23rd of September, 2013. It has been delayed a lot, and the developers even had the nerve to ask for more crowdfunded money a year after it smashed its Kickstarter campaign. Fans have not taken to the endless delays well. Fans have lost faith in the project thanks to its delays and now, it seems, those delays haven’t achieved anything worthwhile. It still looks unfinished and cheap.

The rest of the game doesn’t look this good.

I think Mighty No. 9 is a failure, and I think it has made people reevaluate the pros and cons of crowdfunding. Sure, without crowdfunding we wouldn’t have Mighty No. 9, but I think we would have been better off without it. Crowdfunding games gives different pressures to the developers. On top of the normal pressures, they have to deal with the fans who gave them the money – there is a greater pressure to deliver because it is ordinary people’s money on the line. The game has to be good, otherwise you will be letting everybody who chipped in down.

Mighty No. 9 looks terrible. I know if I paid towards it I’d want my money back. The concept art promised a fun, exciting spiritual successor to the Mega Man series. Mighty No. 9 looks like an awful fan game with no money behind it, trying to be different enough as to not get sued. It has to be released though, they can’t cancel it, as they have already spent all of the backer’s money given to them on this monstrosity. Inafune and Comcept should look back on Mighty No. 9 and feel ashamed.
